Want to learn how to create a new embroidery design yourself? Here’s a free embroidery pattern and guide to help you.
As a new embroidery learner, you need an embroidery pattern and the guidelines we shared in this tutorial.
Pattern Type: Floral Motif
Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate
Purpose: Perfect for kurti necklines, cushion covers, dupattas, or frame art.

Stitches You Can Use in This Design:
- Satin Stitch – This is used to fill in the flower petals and leaves smoothly.
- Back Stitch / Stem Stitch – Ideal for outlining stems and leaf veins.
- French Knots – Perfect for flower centres and small accent dots.
- Lazy Daisy Stitch – Can be used as an alternative for some petals or leaf shapes.
- Chain Stitch – This is for adding a decorative outline around the centre circle or vines.
- Bullion Knots (optional) – Great for adding texture in spiral buds or accents.
Materials You’ll Need:
- Embroidery Hoop – To keep the fabric taut while stitching.
- Embroidery Needles – Use sharp needles with a large eye.
- Anchor/DMC Embroidery Threads – Use vibrant and contrasting colours for a rich look.
- Tracing Paper or Carbon Paper – To transfer the design onto fabric.
- Scissors – For thread trimming and fabric shaping.
- Pencil or Fabric Marker – This outlines the design if it is free-handing.

Best Fabrics to Use:
- Cotton – Most beginner-friendly and stable.
- Linen – Adds a classy texture but may fray.
- Khadi or Muslin – For an organic, handmade appeal.
- Silk or Chiffon (Advanced) – Beautiful but slippery; stabiliser is recommended.
Tips for Beginners:
- Always start with simpler parts using satin or stem stitch, like leaves.
- Use a limited colour palette at first to avoid confusion.
- Practice French knots separately if you’re new to them—they take a little patience.
- Keep your threads untangled and don’t pull too tight to avoid puckering.
Remember: Embroidery is not just about perfection but patience, creativity, and expression. Take your time, enjoy the process, and your hands will create magic!
